Country-style home French cooking.
Friendly, quick service and a great atmosphere.
We showed at 9 on a Thursday niggt and their whole terrace was full. They brought a table from inside and made an extra spot for us!
They bring you the huge restaurant menu on a huge block and the wine list on a lined little notebook in what looks like my grandmas cursive handwriting of old family recipes.
We had the sardine salad, the purée fish soup, the beef with little vegetables, and the chicken with mashed potatoes. For 32 euros, you also get a cheese course and a dessert. The cheese course is about 7 different, tasty cheeses. You'll see the board get passed around the restaurant because there's no way a couple could finish that.
For dessert we had the chocolate mousse and then the Paris-Brest "chez Michel" which was the BEST.
If you're looking for aunthentic home French cooking and don't have une grand-mère a France, I highly recommend this place for dinner! -

Sometimes it's for the best when plans don't work out.
So we actually had plans to go to another restaurant but forgot to check if it was open on a Sunday. As it was closed we quickly Googled the nearest restaurants around Paris Gare Du Nord after stepping off the Eurostar with the best reviews and this is what lead us to discover the fantastic Chez Casimir which turns out to be our favourite restaurant in the whole three days we were at Paris.
Outside it doesn't look like much which is great as it means it's not only aimed for tourists.
So on weekend mornings they served brunch which includes unlimited helpings of the cold buffet section (excluding oysters which are charged €1 each) and then a three course meal before helping yourself at the self service dessert buffet section.
Our French was poor and their English was basic but the staff were still so friendly in trying to help us understand the concept. The three course dishes that were cooked to order seems to be set and they explained to us that it was going to start with soup, omelette and then pork.
We were in a spontaneous mood and hungry so we were glad not to have to fuss over what to order and just have someone plan it out for us. Oh and we're so glad they did.
The cold buffet section was splendid. They had everything from quiche, cured salmon chunks, mustard potato salad, octopus salad, slice yourself cured meats, pork terrine, fresh bread and more. We could have just filled ourselves with that and would have been happily satisfied.
I reached out for two oysters and they were deliciously plump and juicy. In fact all the buffet counter food were delicious. I didn't recall a single thing I didn't like. I don't even usually like mustard but as I believe it was home made rather than bought I found it extra creamy than usual, with far more flavour than I am used to and it went very well with the shredded potato.
Everything tasted home made fresh and refreshing being quite light and greaseless.
Our soup soon followed, vegetable soup served in a little glass cup. It was thick, warm and satisfying. Nothing too fancy but enough to clear your palate for the next dish, the mushroom omelette.
And this was no ordinary omelette. Now we have both eaten a lot of omelette in our lives and even went round Paris looking for more omelettes like this but nothing has ever tasty so silky, creamy and soft like this. The way it was made so thin, almost translucent and melted into our mouth made us wonder how it held so well in the beginning, incasing beautiful juicy mushrooms inside.
Still keeping us in awe was the pork and potato casserole. It is amazing how we could taste every ingredient equally to one another in this dish, not just the textures but the burst of flavours fighting to come through.
The pork had been marinated in some lovely herbs, tenderised perfectly and kept its juices. The potatoes were fluffy and fragrant, soaking up the lovely flavours of the pork too.
Being already stuffed we found the inner strength and willpower, fighting our tummies and mind to sample the buffet dessert section.
It was just as much as the starters ranging from butter thins, shortbread cookies, tiramisu, rice pudding, chocolate fudge cake, blueberry cheesecake, custard pudding, milk pudding and crepes. Of course if you want to reduce the guilt there's fresh fruits such as lychees too. Unbelievable.
Everything was fantastic in terms of atmosphere, service and of course the food. Most importantly it was memorable as we are still dreaming about that omelette till this day (it's been two months) -

Incredible! If you need a quick crash course on real French food that isn't steak frites or croque monsieurs go here! Best service in Paris by far, attentive and actually friendly (will not chew your face off for asking a question!) I got STUFFED on their incredible brunch. I was mistaken that the brunch was merely a cold plate buffet with savory and sweet items, which i was into but when I was happily chowing down on my buffet fare, BAM they hit up the table with INCREDIBLE hot dishes- I had a ramekin of juicy flavorful mussels, a flavorful frittata of sorts with tomato and peppers and when I thought that was it, out comes a quail on hot creamy potatoes. It was so much food! And if you "dislike dessert" like me, go ahead and try the dessert anyways, it's really good and there was not a single bad choice - the very least try it to try it. I was into the cherry flan/cheesecake of sorts and I loveddddd the chocolate cake I had seconds.
Oh and the cheese and butter. Did I mention I came here so I could help myself to cheese and butter? They have excellent cheese and butter. The butter was so beautiful and fresh it makes me cry knowing I'll be forced to go home and not eat this again until I go back to france. -

The Sunday brunch is perfection.
The buffet is a small but well-laden table stocked with cheeses, breads, sausages and other meats, smoked fish and other seafood, salads and more. It was a bit of a guessing game to figure out what was what, but there were so many choices that each of us was able to put together a heaping plateful while still humoring our individual food biases.
In addition to the buffet, brunch includes selections brought to the table. On the Sunday we went, that included mussels that the sole mussel fan among us described as buttery in texture and mild in flavor. She called them the best she'd ever had. The gazpacho, brought in a glass, was just spicy enough.
The dessert buffet is awesome: cakes, mousse, cookies, crepes, fruit, and on, and on. Once again, we each assembled a heaping plateful of choices. Or two platefuls, in one case.
I see some reviews here and elsewhere that complain about the service or the set-up. This is not a brunch in the American tradition of long steam tables piled with soft standards including scrambled eggs and pancakes. Nor is this an American breakfast restaurant where the chipper waitress pops up every four minutes to refresh your coffee and clear the plates in hopes of pushing you out the door.
You'll get Breton food, well prepared, and meant to be eaten in small portions so you can sample a wide range. You will be welcome to spend hours at your table; no rush to bring you your check and push you away. In short: a very Parisian way to spend your weekend. -

I came here for one reason and one reason only: the Breton-inspired brunch. Brunch is the "hot new" thing in Paris, which you can imagine is the case for people not used to combining meals (why would you do that?). Seafood is definitely in the cards for you if you come to Chez Casimir for the brunch. Price is okay for the amount of food you get, and you can say it's definitely unlike anything else you've had/will have in Paris.
Come early if you are bringing a large group (we showed up with 8) so you don't have to fight for a spot.
